Mobile number portability MNP in India: How to change mobile operator keeping existing number

MNP (mobile number portability) was recently launched in INDIA. MNP is not a new thing for telecom world. MNP allows a user to change there mobile operator without changing there mobile number. Here is a complete step by step guide on Mobile number portability(MNP) in INDIA.

First lets see few main points about MNP -

1. MNP allows a user to change his/her telecom operator without changing the mobile phone number.
2. A mobile subscriber shall be eligible to make a request for "porting" (changing) his mobile number upon expiry of a period of ninety days from the date of activation of his present mobile connection.
3. MNP facility shall be available only within a given licensed service area.
4. The Subscriber may be required to pay porting charges, if any, to the Recipient Operator.(max of Rs. 19)

How to Switch Mobile operator Without Changing the Mobile Number? MNP

For porting your number you need to follow below steps -

STEP 1: Send an SMS to 1900 in following format, PORT XXXXXXXXXX where XXXXXXXXXX is your mobile number. You will get an SMS reply that contains a unique porting code.
STEP 2: Contact or SMS to the preferred operator quoting the unique code. This code is valid only for a few days, and one must apply again if it expires.

Now, your existing operator will check with new operator & if there are no dues then approval will be given for porting. You will get an SMS on the time and date when porting will take place. Rules mandate that process be completed within 4 days of applying. After porting is complete, wait for an SMS from your new operator confirming the switch. Your phone may be dead for about 2 hours when the porting takes place.

Process is simple, it will give more competition to the INDIAN telecom players. Operators like BSNL have already initiated free talktime and one month free GPRS offers to customers who choose BSNL with MNP. We will cover all those offer in separate post.

  2. This is such a great innovation in telecommunication industry. This entirely has an effect in media competition. To the fact that most online individuals are finding their own way of making international calls without spending too much amount for just specific numbers of minutes. I bet network providers should better watch out for the VoIP technology provider in the future, since the number of people who are interested about its benefit is rapidly increasing.
