Google Indic Transliteration is very famous tool to type in Hindi and then paste it into your mail or chat, but does not allow functionality for online chat and direct typing.
Recently Google added direct typing facility with transliteration bookmarklet where you can do real-time chatting in any of the following languages. Transliteration bookmarklet is a small piece of code that you store in your browser. Once stored, you can type in Hindi in any text box on any web-site of your choice. It works on Google web-sites as well as other web-sites.
